The 8 Best Children’s Books About Cats

The 8 Best Children’s Books About Cats

Create wonderful memories with your kids, bonding over the lovable kitties in these eight children’s books about cats. Toddlers will love following along as your read to them, while early readers will feel encouraged as they try out a page or two for themselves.

Whether you’re looking for a gift for a young kitty-loving reader or want to add to your child’s growing library, here are the eight best children’s books about cats.

1. Millions of Cats

This classic cat book for toddlers (ages 2 to 5) was a favorite of ours as a kid, and maybe set us on the path to having six cats. In it an old man and an old woman, who are lonely, decide they want a cat. But rather than finding one cat that needs a home, they find millions and billions and trillions of cats. A Newbery Honor winner, every kid deserves to be introduced to this classic.

2. Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Waking Up?

This adorable storybook is perfect for cat-loving toddlers, especially those old enough to be thinking about school for the first time. Kitty Cat, a young kitten, is also new to school. But she keeps getting distracted by other things (chasing a mouse, practicing her purr), instead of getting ready for school.

Told in simple rhyme and paired with sweet pastel illustrations, the book is perfect for kids from 3 to 6 years old. Pair it with two sequels: Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Going to School? And Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Going to Sleep?

3. They All Saw A Cat

picture books about cats they all saw a cat

One of the most unique picture books about cats we’ve come across, this New York Times bestseller and 2017 Caldecott Medal-winning book, is less about a cat and more about how we all see the world differently. A single cat goes for a walk. What could be simpler?

But each pair of eyes that see the cat, see it in completely different ways. How the dog sees the cat is unlike how the mouse sees it. How the flea, the snake, the skunk, and the child see it, are all similarly different. For toddlers (ages 3 to 5) who are still learning to see the world through their own eyes, it provides an eye-opening lesson, that we all experience the world in different ways. And, no one way is the “right” one.

4. I Hate My Cats (A Love Story)

children's books about cats i hate my cats

Kids (ages 5 to 7) that live with cats will get a kick out this book, which offers a humorous take on the peculiarities of our feline friends. Told from the perspective of an exasperated cat dad, the book explores the odd things his cats Ginger and Fred do, as well as their sometimes-destructive nature, and ultimately how he can’t live without them. Written in simple language, this is a great book for early-readers to practice with.

5. The Everything Book of Cats and Kittens

This reference book is for cat-obsessed kids ages 6 to 9 and offers insights into everything from breeds and pet care to grooming and kitty communication. Whether you’re preparing to bring a kitten or cat into your family for the first time or your kids have always lived with cats, this book will help them be better cat parents. Packed with lots of photos, as well.

6. White Cat Black Cat

We love the message of diversity in this cat book for kids ages 4 to 6. Two cats of opposite colors meet for the first time and immediately dislike each other for their differences. After time spent in the other’s “shoes,” they learn to accept those differences and become friends. Written in rhyme and paired with simple illustrations that perfectly match the text, the book offers a timely reminder of how important diversity and acceptance are. The first in a series of four books.

7. Socks

Appropriate for 6- to 8-year-olds, this chapter book tells the story of happy cat Socks, who’s living his best life with Mr. and Mrs. Bricker. But when Mrs. Bricker gets pregnant they have less time for Socks.  Perfect for kids with a new little brother or sister; also appropriate for early readers who want to try reading on their own.

8. Cat at Night

Tag along as a farm cat spends his night’s exploring the fields, farms, forests, and nearby city. Beautiful illustrations show the contrast between how we see at night — dark, in shades of gray — and how cats see — in vivid color. Perfect for kids between 2 and 6.

9. The Too Cute Coloring Book: Kittens
